All pets deserved to be loved and cared for. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Indeed, many pets are abandoned, neglected, and left to fend for themselves. Animal shelters do all they can to keep up, but often the problem grows bigger than they can bear. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to help these animals and shelters to thrive. The Pet Connection has created this guide for how to make a difference in abandoned pets’ lives:
Finding Ways to Donate
Animal shelters and protection societies need support. Here are a few ways you can help them with funding:
- Ask people to donate money to your local shelter in lieu of gifts for birthdays and holidays.
- Encourage local businesses to support animal shelters as part of their charitable giving efforts.
- Start a non-profit and look into how to get an LLC so you can raise funds directly.
Volunteer Opportunities
Shelters need volunteers in and out of the shelter to help keep animals cared for:
- Many shelters need volunteer dog walkers to help dogs stay social and get plenty of exercise.
- You can also volunteer to foster pets in your own home to help keep space in shelters and give one-on-one care to an animal in need.
- Are you a photographer? Shelters have higher adoption rates when they have portrait-style photos. Volunteer for a furry photo shoot to help place some pets.
Everyday Ways to Care for Abandoned Pets
These habits help stray and abandoned pets thrive and survive:
- Here’s a guide for what to do if you find an animal you suspect is a lost pet.
- These DIY cat safehouses can give stray cats a safe, warm place to sleep in cold weather.
- If you notice a lot of stray cats in a neighborhood, reach out to the local shelter — many will capture the cats, spay or neuter them, then release them in order to humanely control the stray population.
These are just a few of the things you can do to help take care of abandoned and neglected pets in your area. Ultimately, the best thing you can do is to reach out to local shelters and ask about how you can help them reach their goals.
